It's A Small World After All ....

I have to share a story with you.

I am always amazed at how teeny our great big world is. Every time. Running into someone you know when you are on holiday. Or finding out your new friend is next door neighbors to a long lost friend of yours. It knocks me over every time. But this story is beyond incredible.

I went to Ethiopia in August 2008. We (Mom + I) went with a mission organization that supports a soccer camp during the rainy season. So, there we were, deep in the heart of Ethiopia - 4 hours from Addis Ababa and 2 hours from the nearest paved road (and bottle of cold Coca Cola).

I was so giddy to be there - I was snapping photos like crazy - soccer kids, baboons, village people, trees, rain bouncing off the lake. Basically, if it held still for 1/8th of a second, I snapped it. I can home from a 10 day trip with over a thousand images.

After we got home (and I recovered from my parting gift, Malaria), I opened my Etsy shop. I filled it with Africa images and then lots of other goodies I have. For some reason, I kept this one particular image of a village family in my shop. It never sold but it was sweet. I had been meaning to remove it but never got around to it.

A couple weeks ago, I got a convo on Etsy (that's an email through Etsy). A woman in Canada wanted to know more specifics about that image. Where exactly was it taken and when? Not the normal client questions but I was more than happy to respond to her. I explained where Lake Langano was and that it was an image of a village family.

Ok, hold on to your socks.

She writes me back : their son was adopted from that area and given the information she had, there was a very good chance that this was an image of him with his biological mother and brother. Did I have any more images of the family or other villagers?

Langano family ... !

I immediately scoured my archives and contacted my aunt who works for SIM and Sports Friends (they took us to Africa and still go every year). My new Canadian friend also sent me images she took of her son and his biological father. I immediately recognized the father - he's distinctive - but I could not find an image of him. I was sure I had one. I was positive. Then I remembered we were introduced to the village elders but I was asked not to take their picture. He had to be one of them.

So, as the story goes now. My wonderful aunt is going to take copies of my photos and copies of the photos my Canadian sent me when she goes back to Langano in June. And my family snap shot is on its way to Canada.

I am so excited to see if anything else develops. But, as I told my new friend/ client, something made me not remove the photo and in my heart it is her son.

Have a great holiday weekend!

A Year Older -

A year ago today, I think I spent the entire 24 hours glued to the computer. Furiously typing, listing, tagging, uploading, and voila! Loud Waterfall Photography had an Etsy shop & a Facebook page. A year later, I have many new dear friends, a few photos scattered throughout the world, a brand new blog that I am still trying to get the hang of, and a sense of accomplishment that I've managed to keep something alive for this long.

What will the next year hold? I have a few branches I am thinking of adding to the tree. New products based on my images, maybe a trip or two to replenish the archives and the soul. An expansion to the family is in the blueprints and permits stage (pinkprints?!?). The house needs a bit of a revamping - Pinterest has a way of igniting the fires & imagination. The next 12 months are shaping up to be full of excitement & adventure ....

Downtown Los Angeles - Chinatown - Walk-About

Thank you for joining me on my little adventure! I'm having lots of fun and learning even more. If you are ever in the Los Angeles area, I would love to buy you a cup of coffee (glass of wine?!!) and maybe we can go for a walk-about with our cameras ...

Take Me Out

The Red Sox are my husband's team. If we lived any closer, I am sure we would have season tickets. Our baby-moon to Boston and the east coast was so much fun! We took a tour of Fenway. Wow. It was incredible. The history lesson, the park, it was a great photo opportunity. I look back now & see different angles and perspectives I wish I had snapped. That just means we have to go back! Darn it ...

One of my favorite Fenway shots was included in this terrific baseball treasury ....

Time well spent

Through The Eyes of Children is a NPO in Rwanda that is helping to make a difference in the lives of the orphans.

Gadi

Children, ages 7-18, are given cameras to record their world. It is cathartic as well as eye opening. Images may be purchased through their website; they are stunning. Eloquent. Vibrant. Proceeds fund future projects as well education for the children. There is also a fund set up for scholarships so that these once lost orphans may attend university. A picture really does say a thousand words.  Please - if you have a moment, see them for yourself ...

Thanks-

My question is ....

Jenn of LavenderAvenue selected my Fenway detail as her thank you gift for hanging out with us! Off to Colorado we go!

Thank you Danny! Maximonsterjte Photography has been one of my favorite Etsy shops (Thank you fPOE team!) She snagged her thank you gift too! A bit of San Francisco is on it's way to the Netherlands ...

So ... I have made no secret of the fact that this endeavor, blogging, is anything I really understand - impact-wise or relevancy-wise - in a society where we are reduced to 140 characters or simply a headline, why would someone be interested in me prattling on about .... what ... anything? Everything? Just art stuff? Are you as excited as I am that my daughter is learning new songs at school and can now hit a ball off the tee (she's 2, by the way) and run to a base? That I tried a hit Pinterest recipe and it was just awful?

I guess my question is ... what interests you? Why do you follow a blog?

I'm working on it!

Happy! Happy Father's Day to my amazing husband who gives so much and always has more - I love you baby - you rock!

Keri snapped up her thank you gift - this is what she chose ....

I would love to say LWP is a full time job - I'm working on it. I would love to stay home with Sadiecakes everyday and go on outings to hunt for photos - I'm working on it.  But there is other stuff to do ...

I decided to partake in a craft swap. Let me preface this by saying I am crafty in theory. I adore the idea of living in a Pinterest world - reality is not as such. So joining this swap seemed the perfect way to jump in.

I have been paired up with 2 people : one gal I make something for and the other makes something for me! Pretty clever! I have figured out what I am making for Linda but I can't tell you yet - she will see this. But I picked something that seems safe but functional and has the potential to be quite cute!

Stay tuned for photos next week after I finish & it's in the mail .... I'm working on it!

Cheers-
